Building On Something

When last we spoke, it was February of this year. Two posts in one year — progress. and I’m certainly not counting out a third post. Suspense.

A quick rundown of things — The podcast was launched, successfully, or as successfully as a podcast about flipping couches can be whilst launched in the middle of a global pandemic. My co-host and friend Justin joins me on “Schemin” — a DIY entrepreneurial venture podcast. we managed to raise around $3200 dollars for charity as part of the process, and we learned a great deal about production that we’re going to put to work in 2022 with season 2. We’re also changing the format to a YouTube podcast.

I am currently employed with a local marketing & advertising agency as a creative director and project manager. That has been fantastic and I’ve learned a lot that has helped solidify a lot of my experience in the field. More on that later.

Kids are great, Isaac started school, Ellie is talking, so things at home are very sweet. The biggest news on the homefront is that —

I got married.

Again.

I got married again.

Rachel and I had been waiting to tie the knot until after COVID ended, however given the current situation we decided this past Summer that we needed to go ahead and do it. Pictures exist and are out there on the internet someplace, the curious will know how to find them.

Getting married after a divorce can be scary. Getting remarried quickly after divorce… is terrifying. There are a lot of “What If?” scenarios that have to be considered, and a lot of soul searching that must take place to ensure you’re not just jumping from the proverbial frying pan and into another, equally hot and scalding frying pan.

When it comes to marriage, you’re never quite finished because there’s always work to be done. So long as both partners are willing to continue to put in the work, it continues to go on. It’s as simple as that.*

Over the past couple of months I’ve been pretty introspective, thanks to all these changes. I’m a manic spreadsheeter therefore I’ve built a pretty intimidating Google Sheet that documents my life from 2004 up until today. I’ve enjoyed thinking about the things that it’s taken to get me to this point in my life, and imagining what it’ll take to get thru the next leg. This was brought about by an idea that was shared with me by a mentor that, “Past experiences will always align with your future opportunities.”

In 2022 I’m refocusing on the things that I’ve found joy in previously. Those include writing, reading, running, working out, cooking, and building things. Also video games. Life’s too short.

I’ve been thinking a lot about online personas and what causes content to become “sticky” — and there are a few takeaways that we’re going to be incorporating into Schemin’ season two.

Alas, if there was one big miss this year it’s the fact that the second book didn’t get written. I’m telling myself that’s OK because I feel like I’m in the middle of something that will bear out to be pretty good content if and when book two comes around. We’re still in the long rows.

*It’s never as simple as that with marriage.
